Ferritin levels are a great and easy way to screen for iron deficiency and low iron levels associated with iron deficient anaemia. Low levels of Ferritin have been associated with reduced fertility. The common cause is heavy periods. Iron levels also come under strain during pregnancy, where early detection can prevent anaemia developing. Other causes of low Ferritin include hypothyroid states, bowel disorders including inflammatory bowel disease and ascorbic acid disorders.
