Wowzerss
I always marvelled at this wonderful sounding spirit and never drank the original until some years later when I became an officer myself and whilst that was a little bit too smooth for my palate, I determined that it was a pleasant single malt. Over the years I have witnessed much whisky consumption and have always been amazed at what individual drinkers would take with their whisky. For myself, it has always been an after dinner drink, usually with water or a cube of ice, others it is a drink enjoyed with cola, lemonade: a combination that would make the purists shudder. Thankfully this is a new single malt which is aimed a different generation or culture. X by Glenmorangie has been distilled with a specific customer in mind - those more pragmatic when it comes to taking a drink and not necessarily those who are dictated to by custom. My bottle arrived to taste and I was pleasantly surprised. Whilst has been prepared to be enjoyed with a variety of mixers, the only way to taste it in my mind was separately neat, with water and with a cube of ice. (Just a small amount). It actually is nice on its own, a bit sweet for my taste, but pleasant all the same and nicer in my opinion than the original - more bourbon than single malt.I couldn’t drink it with coke, although my 21 year old had 25ml over crushed ice with 150ml of full fat coke and he really rated it highly. My wife and I have also tried it with Fever Tree tonics (not for me, but she liked it) and Fever Tree ginger ale, which I found extremely pleasant and ideal for sitting out and enjoying as a long drink after a barbecue. We have yet to experiment further and in this regard there is a number of websites which offer suggested recipes to be more adventurous than a splash of coke!Very much a cocktail drink for a cocktail culture and one to try……..unless you are a purist

You have to have at least one bottle in your lifetime
Lagavulin 16yo is my choice of whisky and has been since I first sampled it many years ago. When I spotted this on a lightning deal for £55 I just had to give it a try. I am glad I did and I have enjoyed it, but I was in the trap of thinking that because it costs about £20+ more than the 16yo, then it will be a much better whisky. Many will agree, but I had the impression, that whilst this whisky had a few new characteristics to it and ones I particularly liked, I still want to say that the 16yo maintains the number 1 spot for me. In some respects I was happy with that because if I had liked this more, then I would have to have re-thought my whisky budget. This has a slightly darker tinge to it, soft and easy to consume and with a hint of peatiness that doesn't overwhelm the senses. I tend to find with Islay peaty malts that if I have more than a few shots in one sitting, the first few are great, but after that my tastebuds acclimatise and the enjoyment eases off. Which is when I know it is time to stop. With this bottle, every one was a pleasure and I had to be careful not to finish it in one go.It is a superb whisky, but I can't justify £70 for a bottle when I get just as much enjoyment from the 16yo. I won't buy another bottle unless it's on a deal, but I do highly recommend it for those who like Islay malts. If you like Lagavulin, you are sure to enjoy this one

Best Whisky under £100
Unfortunately, since I first bought this for £50 from amazon a few years ago - the price has rocketed to around £80+ today. Put simply, I can see why! A deliciously peaty whisky with a real depth of flavour. I’m massively into my whiskeys and in particular Japanese and Islay varieties. Around once a year I have a few friends round and we blind-taste test around 20 whiskeys (all under £100) and score. This beauty has come out top every single time.I recently brought a bottle in for Friday drinks at a top law firm on Chancery Lane. A few of the partners have had their fair share of high-price tipples but we’re massively impressed. I left half a bottle down!I can’t speak for some of the 1* reviews, or those that favour the 16 year. This beats it hands down. Try them both side by side (which I have many times) and the distillers edition is noticeably better...The only problem, price! Now reserved for a bottle for birthdays or Christmas :(Every lover of whiskey should at least buy a bottle before they die! Take my word for it.

Absolutely delightful
I purchased this for a friend as a 30th birthday gift. He's a bit snobbish when it comes to whiskey, so I was expecting him to say it was Ok/nice. He says it's one of the nicest things he has ever had, and he loves it. Having tried it myself, I have to agree it's excellent. 10/10

One of the best for the money.
One of my all time favourites you can't go wrong with any Lagavulin and this does not disappoint. As I picked up a couple of bottles for just over £50.00 each I was highly delighted.

An amazing whisky, if only I could afford to buy it as quickly as we drink it!
I am normally a bit of a scrooge at Christmas , but splashing out on a bottle of this during a lightning deal certainly made me more merry at Christmas! An amazing whisky and better dare I say it even than the Lagavulin 16 year ( opinions seem divided on this ). Lagavulin for me stands head and shoulders above every other whisky I have tried so far.. and I have been searching quite hard for something to rival it!

A smoother tamer Lagavulin...is that a good thing? it would seem so!
A very smooth Islay malt, lacking the medicinal qualities of the regular Lagavulin, with less smokiness. At one level it is stunning but if you are expecting the classic Lagavulin earthy peat smoke and sea it is only subtly evident here.. It is more reminiscent of an Ardbeg, but sweeter, and very very drinkable, you have been warned.

Bought as a gift, Ron Swanson recommended!!
Bought as a birthday present for my other half. She absolutely loved it, very rich, peaty, smoky. She enjoyed the smell and sipping it slowly in front of a wood fire.
