Good Alternative to a cheaper third party brand
Starting out with 4 stars as I thoroughly test the unit. It is replacing a third party brand that while worked for some time, recently failed to burn, though it would play back. Extensive testing proved that; a repair on a low priced device was not worth the effort, so an HP brand was bought to compliment an HP 840 G8 laptop. So far it has burned just fine, and plays both audio CD and video DVD correctly. Do not expect compatibility with Blu-Ray format, this is not a Blu-ray player nor burner. I will up to 5 stars if everything continues to function as it should. All in all, you should be better off with this than a lower priced knockoff that may not stand the test of time.Upping to five stars. It is doing so it should.

Came through in a pinch
My ancient Samsung DVD burner started missing huge sectors of quality burnable MP3s and thought it might be time to update and this name brand HP (with Dell affiliations) fit the bill and just burned about 5GB from CDs, so liking its utility. The spindle is a bit clunky to seat, but the RIPs blaze and that's what it is there for.

Hoping this performs as well as the old one...
So according to my records, my old LG DVD/CD reader/writer add-on drive lasted almost ten years (under moderate use), and cost about the same as this HP branded replacement. For some reason, the LG started to have read issues as the laser moved further from the center. And it was getting noisy mechanically.Anyway, this new HP replacement is running fine so far, and it's whisper quiet.Hope I get the same mileage out of as the old LG. :)

Simple, High-Quality, Plug-and-Play Drive
I have so far used this external drive with four computers of varying ages and makes, two PCs and two laptops. Worked well instantly upon plug-in in all cases. Playback of my DVDs is much better than withmy Dell drive. Like many external drives, this one has to be treated gently when inserting or removing a disk.

Quality. Price. Easy to order and safe delivery.Very few laptops come with DVD drive and although you won't need it often ... Nice to have an external on hand.

Works great after I figured out how to use it. No instructions were included. I had to search online how to rip and burn my CDs.
